i hope tihs doesn't sound crazy or something, but i heard from someone that getting into eastern virginia is hard if you're not white.. especially because of the area. does anyone know if there's any basis to this? i put the school on my list because it's in virginia, one of the states i wouldnt mind living in.. but i'm starting to think filling out the secondary (if i get it) would be a waste of time..
what do you think?

Oh it's true! EVMS hates anyone who is not white. This includes African Americans, asians, native americans, hispanic people, middle easterners, Indians or white people who have spent a significant amount of time at the beach. This is obviously seen by the fact that they have literally 0 minorities in each class.

They also have a sign in the window that says, "long haired freaky people need not apply"

ha okay.. i guess the underlying things would be hard to find out.. and i think i was looking for people that got rejected here with good stats. the person who told me could very well be bitter for not getting in and has strong opinions.

i know its easy to make it sound ridiculous, but just ask anyone that's been discriminated against- it can make you paranoid if you hear something like that.

EVMS is one of those schools that looks at the whole applicant. They also are on the lower end of the spectrum in terms of stats.

So a few things could be happening:
1) There may be a disconnect between stats and the rest of the applicant including ECs or how they interview leading to a lack of acceptance from EVMS.

OR

2) Because EVMS generally has a class with marginally low stats it does not waste its time on someone with very solid stats that will obviously choose somewhere "better." Let's say you have a hispanic applicant with a 3.8 and a 36. Obviously he is a very solid applicant. Unless he is a Va native, he's not likely going to pick EVMS over better ranked schools or his state school unless he shows a very obvious interest in EVMS. Why even offer an acceptance? Apathy toward a school is an ap. killer.

To my knowledge, EVMS has a URM percentage on par with the rest of the country's medical schools so it is likely one of the above options.

This is probably not true. In fact, I'm pretty sure it is very far from the thruth. Diversity is highly valued in virtually all academic intitutions. However, (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) I do believe that EVMS tends to favor in-state applicants even a little more than other Virginia schools which are already highly in-state student bounded.

While it may be true that EVMS does marginally favor in-state applicants compared to the other VA schools (UVA and MCV/VCU) all of the VA schools generally accept more out of staters than most state schools. For instance, 40% of VCU/MCV's class is out of state.

I just got an acceptance here so I would say they do accept minorities. Granted the school is not very diverse, I was quite impressed by their institution.

Hogwash. Medical schools actively recruit minority students. EVMS is no exception.

FYI, I interviewed at EVMS and my tour guide wasn't white. It was a great school and I recommend that you apply there.
