Lastly, I think the main reason people assume our profession is easy is that there are simply way too many pharmacy programs open. This decreases competition in a sense and allows the opportunity for more people to get into the profession. Now the MD's can fire back and say that they let even *****'s in, but it's not true at all! There are ~120 MD/DO schools (I think), 60~ Dental Schools, ~23 Veterinary Schools, ~19 Optometry Schools. I think the Pharmacy school number is in the 80-90's? Correct me if I'm wrong please.

This was probably correct in 2009, now in 2012 it's more like 120-130 pharmacy schools. Scary the difference in 3 years.

]I think the main issue here is that the medical students (our arch-nemesis when I was in graduate school too) all think they are able to walk-on-water. They all think Dentists and Vet's were those who failed to get into medical school, Optometrists were those who failed to get into Dental school, and Pharmacists are the left overs.[/B]

So then they spread this type of animosity towards Pharmacists because they believe that pharmacists are way over-paid for the training and job they perform. I'm soooo sorry that we all couldn't give men prostate exams in school 🙄. Trust me, ignorance breeds ignorance. The same applies to some friends I know who just finished law school from a Tier 1 school. They also think they're the greatest because our culture emphasizes that Lawyers and MD's are the top profession of society 🙄.

Different cultures value different things. In Asia, Pharmacists are held as high or higher regard then Doctors (mainly because you don't have to see a physician for a prescription for your medication, the pharmacist actually is trained to give diagnosis and help prescribe medication). In Germany, the term "Doctor" is reserved for those who attain their PhD, whereas a "MD" is a physician. Like I said, different cultures emphasize different things.

Are you sure these are the attitudes of 'most' medical students and physicians? I think the ones who think that way are in the minority.

All I have to say is "I sure hope that guy is not working ANYWHERE close to my family members! lol

Wait what? You have to give prostate exams in medical school? **** that ****. I'll just skip that class.

I love it when that happens. 🙂
Hi Thread,
I must say I am shocked in the amount of views this thread has gotten of the years and thought it was best to clarify a few things…
When I initially wrote this a few years ago I was going through a tough time, my head was not in the game . For everyone who was supportive, inquired why I was asking such a melancholic question and stressed the importance of hard work – I sincerely thank you. Anyone I offended, I apologize as I did not know enough about the profession. Everyone simply trolling on SDN – consider this - you are future or current health care professionals inside and outside the pharmacy, you may want to not "run for the razors" with your witty repartee.
Best wishes in career and life.

Don't leave us hanging Bob- did you end up enrolling in pharmacy school?

Yes, I am starting my rotations this May.

Since others may be wondering what happen to me or my views on the state of the profession too:

Academically I have done well in school and did not pick a school on the basis of rigor – I made Rho Chi, have Leadership experience, took clinical electives, etc . For the past 3 years I have been working for two institutions and I plan to pursue that route upon graduation. I have thought about residencies, however, I think the profession is too much of a mess as we have a lack authority, a dwindling job market and 40+ new schools recently accredited.

I hope I helped answer some of your questions. Feel free to PM me.
