I'll be taking the MCATs for the first time this September, and plan on applying for a SMP the following year (summer/fall of 2008).
This gives me a 2 semester gap to fill with ECs...
Currently, I'm looking into 2 possibilities:
1)An 1200+ hours after school tutor/mentor/volunteer club adviser position offered by Americorps. I'm leaning toward this option due to fact that I love working with kids😍, and it's also part time in the afternoon only. This gives me the freedom to take some classes in the morning, and Phleb/EMT classes at night. The cons are that it's a year long program, slightly long commute, and non-healthcare related.
2)An employment opportunity with a generics research company. I'll basically be doing the simple lab stuff like PCR, Gel testing, etc. Easy commute, get paid, etc. The cons are the full time requirement which limit upper division classes to nights only, and the fact that there won't really be much "research" going on at my position.
For those of you who landed research opportunities after undergrad without being in grad school:
How did you do it and what credentials are needed?
