Hi guys.
I am now volunteering in a community clinic and a milk bank and hope to get around 200-400 hours by the time I apply next year. I am also involved in Quiz Bowl (sometimes... twice per month perhaps) and was in orchestra for high school and college. I am trying to apply to a leadership position at my school. Furthermore, I have searched the forums on this subject, but many posters differed on their opinions. I heard that judging of extracurriculars was subjective and one adcom told me during her presentation at my school that they would give the least focus on extracuuricular activities in the application.

My question is... should I do more in terms of extracurricular stuff?

You look pretty well rounded, maybe try to get some more leadership positions and some sports stuff going. Of course judging ECs would be subjective, but it can never hurt to be involved with more things. Make sure they're actually of interest otherwise you'll get bored fast.

ECs will show that you're not just a bookworm (which is an important quality). It might not be the part that has the most emphasis, but it's important.

Also, get some research going somewhere.

Oh yes I am sorry.... I started playing tennis in April.... NTRP rating of 2.0 (the med school counselor told me to be "technical" in the extracurricular listing) and I just got started doing research at my school... will be continuing through this summer. Thanks for the advice though.

Overall, it sounds like you have a decent blend of extracurricular activities. My suggestions would be to shadow some physicians and obtain leadership positions. In the grand scheme of things, it is probably more important to ensure that your grades remain high as opposed to jamming in more ECs.

yeah OhioDoc, that is what I thought too because of my low 3.6 ish GPA.

Okay, now that I have done with finals. another question about EC. I currently work with a milk bank and a community clinic. In the community clinic, I am doing paperwork for the office staff. And in the milk bank, I am pasteurizing the milk and sometimes recording the inventory of new milk donated to the facility. My question is, although both of these are in a health care facility, I am not having any actual patient contact. Should I participate in another volunteering opportunity at the hospital where I have patient contact even though they also say that first semester at their hospital will be at the information desk? I saw a thread from the archives ( by using the search button) where members discussed the usefulness of being a volunteer at the hospital in that situation.
