Hello everyone,

I interviewed at 13 places, most interviews went well. However I got ECFMG certified on February6th, 2013 which is 2 weeks before the ROL submission day.
(Was already ECFMG verified in November after completing all required steps)

Will this affect me when programs finalize their ROL?

I understand that most programs begin making their ROL by 1st week of Feb and I got certified in the 1st week itself..

I made sure to email all programs and also sent them a scanned copy of my certificate..
No where during the interviews was I asked about my pending certification except 1 program in texas..(I had all my interviews before my certification)

Could any senior member with experience answer this question..someone such as aProgramDirector..

thank you !

I went to a Caribbean med school, so I also had to go through the whole ECFMG process. I finished school on 11/30/12 and got ECFMG certified on 2/4/13. I, however, did not call programs nor scanned a copy of it because they knew I would be done and those papers would come in and I am a US citizen. Most students in our school who graduate in May successfully start residency in July.

Although, I don't know where you are an FMG. Perhaps the Caribbean ones have a different story.

You're fine. Most likely you were fine anyway--programs saw that you had completed all the requirements and the certificate was a formality. That's likely why most programs didn't make an issue of it while you were interviewing. By following up with an email and scan of the document before the ROL deadline, you did everything you could possibly do to let programs know you'd be able to start residency on time.

Did anyone not get ECFMG certified in time? What happens if a person is not ECFMG certified in time for feb 20 ROL deadline? Does it have to be done by FeB 20 or by the date the program submits their list (which could be earlier)?

Has this happened to any applicants?

Have any program directors interviewed people who were not certified in time and were not able to be ranked?

You don't have to be ECFMG Certified by the date of the rank order list. You only have to have completed all the steps toward certification.

Certification must be obtained by the time you start residency. The exception would be for programs that require certification and in those cases they usually do prior to interviewing you.

What if a candidate had not completed all of the steps toward cerfication, like if they failed Step 2 CS, for example. Would they be withdrawn from the match by the NRMP or by the program director? Are program directors notified of such things? Has a program director ever ranked someone only to see that they had been withdrawn?

If your are an IMG, then you will automatically be withdrawn from the match if you haven't passed Step 1, 2CK, and 2CS. When we get our final match list back, we'll see that you were withdrawn -- we see where everyone we ranked matched.

Ok that makes sense now. Thanks Winged Scapula and aProgDirector !
