Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with this... I finished school in June and passed step 1, step 2 CS and just took my step 2 CK several days ago.. I'm anxiously waiting for my result. My question is can i apply for my ECFMG certificate? I read on their website that i have to pass my CK before applying. i'm from a pretty new med school so they don't really have any directions for me. Also i'm going to apply for the match this year so is it better for me to wait for my score, apply for the ecfmg certificate, then apply for the match? or apply for the match now and wait for my certificate? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Also as a foreign medical graduate, do have have to take the TOEFL in order to get my certificate. Once again thank you for any input.

i did some research... and in order to get certified you have to pass step 1 and step 2 (cs &ck) and have your diploma. download forms 344, 345, 187 on ecfmg.org and follow the instructions on those forms.

In order to be certified you have to have passed USMLE Steps 1 and 2 CK/CS and have your final medical diploma. You should have your CK scores soon and would be eligible to apply for the certificate.

However, you should NOT wait until you are certified before applying for the match because this can take weeks, especially if they have to have translations of your transcripts, medical diploma, etc. Thus, you might find yourself not being able to apply (if you wished to have your certificate in hand) until November, which would be past some program's deadlines.

Most programs only want to know that you are eligible for certification for you to apply; you must have completed all steps toward certification (except final diploma) by the date of the rank order list submission. Therefore, I encourage you to apply now if you are willing to start residency July 1, 2007; otherwise you will have to apply late, take your chances or wait out the year.

Just to add a few notes - once you pass Step 2 CK, you will be automatically issued your ECFMG certificate, assuming your medical credentials have been verified and you are financially cleared. TOEFL is no longer a ECFMG requirement. Also, it would be wise to get started with the application process now. You could wait until you know you've passed CK before actually sending out the apps, as it would only be 3 wks. But if you're confident you passed, go ahead and apply now.

Please correct me if i am wrong!!
The way i read for the ECFMG Cert is:
You have to have the results of Step1 and Step2 CK and CS (not just step2 CK, as soemone stated above) and your diploma. Also your transcripts must have been verified by ECFMG in order to apply for the ECFMG Certificate.

If some 100% sure that you can apply for the cert without the CS results then please let me know, as i am waiting for the CS results. I have every other req fulfiled for the cert.

Thanks.
