Does the ECFMG exam have to be taken by all FMGs (even carib schools that are accredited in all 50 states like SGU)? Thanks.

All IMG's or FMG's who want to practice in the US must take USMLE Step 1, USMLE Step 2 CK, and USMLE Step 2 CS. Upon passing all three exams, the IMG/FMG will receive an ECFMG certificate. Again, all IMG's or FMG's who want to practice in the US must be ECFMG certified. This includes graduates from SGU, even though the school is approved in all 50 states.

Generally (but not always)

IMG = US Citizen who goes outside of the US/Canada to get a MD

FMG = Non-US/Canadian citizen who obtains a MD outside of US/Canada

While the above is true, a large majority of people in medicine, including IMGs and FMGs (as defined above) use the terms interchangably. Its a non-issue.
