Hello,

I have a friend who graduated from medical school in Europe and is headed over to America. In order to qualify for steps 1/2/3 as an IMG, does she need to fill out the ECFMG number/information first? Or can she take the steps without registering?

You cannot apply to take the USMLE exams as a foreign graduate without having registered through the ECFMG.

The ECFMG acts on behalf of NBME for exam registrations for foreign students/graduates.

The ECFMG ID# is the same as a foreign grads USMLE ID.
