Hey guys,
hope this fall semester is going well for all of you.
I just have a couple concerns I wanted to share with SDN.
im currently on my first semester of my second year. im doing well in my courses after panicking in the first couple of weeks like i always do. anyways it feels like I started college yesterday and im already on my second year. scary. anyways idk I just feel like time is flying and I wont have time to build up good ECs.... which is scaring me a little. here is what I have done so far.

currently emergency department volunteer---- around 50 hours so far

research for spring semester and a 40 hour week in the summer--- I don't feel like I learned much out of this research because I was thrown into the middle of it. it was pretty boring as well.

currently tutoring biology- 1 semester- the problem with is I tutor intro bio so not many students need help

The only shadowing experience I have is a 6 hour day in the operation room at the hospital. multiple surgeons.

I feel like im so behind......

any suggestions>?

Don't sweat it too much, that's a decent list for one year in college. I would start doing a little more shadowing/ED volunteering, and try to get a year of research in if you can. Also, make sure you have names and emails/phone numbers to list to back up each activity. Just be sure not to focus on your ECs so much that grades/MCAT slip; they open the doors. Overall, you're on the right track with ECs.

Looks pretty good so far. If you really don't like research, drop it and fill that time with something else. Maybe get involved on campus in some capacity. Good luck!

mmmh thanks for the response, I just feel like some medical schools want 100+ shadowing hours.. this is keeping me up at night. Im not as outgoing as I would like to think I am. 100 hours is crazy in my opinion!!
I don't even know how to approach a doctor, all the doctors at my ED don't seem to get any sleep haha they seem restless!

does anyone have any tips !

Just keep emailing/banging on doors until you find one you click with and cram some hours in with them. Every doctor and specialty is going to be different and have a different style, so try to get some exposure to a few if you can. I don't have any major cheat codes for it, though, and I certainly remember it being stressful haha. 100 hours isn't that much if you just do a couple weeks of it in the summer, or space it out to a 6-8 hr day every now and then.
