So I am moving up to NYC (from GA) for spring semester and was wondering if anyone knew of any places or contacts they can give me for volunteering, shadowing, research, lab work etc. I know the city fairly well, and will be living close to a few hospitals. I figured I would ask for any help if possible!

What hospital will you be near? If you are near 135th street in Upper Manhattan I can hook you up with some volunteering there. I've been there three years so far going on four so I can introduce you to the director of the ER there and you can fit your schedule to better fit your needs. Any physician in the ER will let you shadow them once you introduce yourself, same thing goes with the PA's working.

Just pm me if you like

Yeah it really depends on where your moving to and if your willing to travel. I lived in Queens my whole life but I liked traveling out to Manhattan for volunteering and shadowing. I actually volunteered at the New York Downtown Hospital, which was the hospital located right next to the World Trade Center. They have a great volunteering program that I would recommend.

I think traveling shouldn't be a problem in the city. I mean if I can commute from jersey city to NYC, about a hour for me. I'm sure its easy for the OP granted he/she isn't too far like Brooklyn to Harlem just forget it. What volunteering program you guys have down there? I would love to know lol since I'll be starting one up hopefully this summer if everything goes according to as planned (dang hippa doesn't allow anything)

thanks for the help! im going to be living in Gramercy (24th st) area closer to hospitals like Beth Isreal, and i think NYU hospital?? I am not entirely sure. I am definitely willing to travel to both places you mentioned above. It is easy to get around on the subway so I would definitely be willing and able 🙂.

Thats the link to NY Downtown. I actually moved around throughout the hospitals to check out different departments while I was volunteering. I mainly volunteered at the cardiology dept. and the area where they kept the inpatients. It was a good experience since I met a patient that influenced me positively and I was able to use my encounter during my personal statement. Sometimes the inpatient dept was depressing though. Some patients were abandoned by their families and they didn't have anyone at their side but me.

Yeah I know what you mean. A lot of the patients I worked with are old and their families are losers. I really mean that too because here you have your father on his death bed at the age of 90 and where is the family? He told me they came twice while he's been there. HE'S BEEN THERE 1 YEAR!!

Also medicine mike I would like to add don't think you'll be with impatients right away, takes time. You hav to form a bond with the physician and all first. Some physicians are also stingy about it others are kids at heart like trying to hide from you in the psych department (very scary).

I would suggest you choose a hospital close by because in NYC you really can't go wrong all the hospitals see action, other parts see worse then others. If your into cardiology and stuff try st lukes very good over there. Into working with Columbia grads and all come to Harlem since it's in partnership with Columbia. If your into the downtown area of NY hit up the link provided. It all really is up to you.

I think downtown would have lots of clinical? Azn what's good about the hospital down there? Like surgery or anything big?

lol I have no clue dude, none of the departments seemed to be better than the others. It was pretty balanced, but when it comes to the staff within those departments, the cardiology dept people are very friendly while the inpatient department was terrible. Most of the time, the workers there stayed at the main desk and they only got up if the patient was pressing on a button. They never went around to talk to the patients or check up on them on an hourly basis. It was fine though, it gave me plenty of time to talk to the patients and check up on them as if I were the doctor haha

sounds like the nurses where I work at. well I guess all hospitals have that problem after a while the nurses just become to lazy.

I appreciate all of the replies. I know there are a few hospitals downtown but I am willing to head over around the financial district or wherever for good volunteer work. The hospital I work at now has the best volunteer program on Earth so Im excited to see what another big city can bring to my resume!

Also, in regards to lab research etc, would my best bet be with a university?

Yeah I think so. I did research with one of the professors at my school and it was pretty good. I wouldn't say I would do research for a living but it was a good experience and it really helps you see what science is. I felt very complete as a student after I finished my time doing research.

Which college are you going to by the way? I went to the City College of New York up in Harlem.

well i was going to re-take precalc at Hunter college, but i found out i could do an online pre-calc course at my current school in GA, while i live up there. I might do another random science course at some CUNY college around the city though. I will be living extremely close to Baruch College too

I doubt Baruch has any real science classes though. I think you have a better chance with Hunter.

yah they only have like the basic biology and an anatomy class. there are only about 5 total science classes ha

haha yeah, they don't really do science like hunter or ccny

oh yeah, after reading some other threads i forgot to mention that you should try shadowing a DO. specially one that specializes in osteopathic manipulative medicine/treatment. its very cool and you get to see what distinguished DOs from MDs even though most DOs dont do it anymore.
