I'm not the kind of guy that likes to join a ****-ton a clubs to look good on paper. The clubs at my school are really just a waste of time. Will TAing, research, and tutoring be "enough" for a med school app? Those are things that I would truly love to do and will be able to do next year at my school.

You should still get involved in some meaningful work that shows alturism, it would only help. You shouldn't look at it as a checklist, rather a way to grow personally and show that.

How is TAing and tutoring not altruistic?

Dont kid yourself it is a checklist. Once volunteering became essentially mandatory it is no longer volunteering.

That's where i'll agree to disagree. Sure i do know alot of people who treat it as a checklist, but that doesnt mean there aren't people who truly have a passion for it, and would do it otherwise.

Tutoring you'd get paid(i'm assuming so), and TAing as well. Sure its a good cause, but also one for your wallet.

Because you can only be sincere when you're not getting paid? Lol... Sound like a pre med bro.

Anyhow, op you do have pretty good ECs. The way I got my clinical EC was to do inpatient PT tech volunteering . It's a great way to get direct contact... Literally . But yea you can easily join habitat for humanity or something like that.

I completely forgot to tell you guys that I am CNA certified and volunteer at nursing home. Call me an a-hole, but doing hard work without getting paid sucks - bottom line. The opportunity cost of volunteering is greater than the monetary cost in my eyes. CNA work is dirty. It's dirty, dirty work. It sucks, but it's worth it. A thank you from a helpless resident means a lot more than a thank you from a customer at Subway.

I'm just saying from the perspective of an adcom haha, you all seem to want to confirm that one should play the game, so i'm simply just agreeing and providing some inferences.

It is true that everyone has to play the game a little

You know, it might have been relevant to include that 😛 Then you're fine!!

And i for one definitely agree, that you should in general be paid for work you do. When people talk about doing internships or things like that working 40 hours a week for free for "experience" i cringe. That is a huge world of difference compared to volunteering for a non-profit a few hours a week for example.

Play the game, d00d.

I can't believe you don't think honor societies are lyk TOTALLY AWSUM!!!11
