Would applying to the honors program improve my chances of being accepted?

Okay, I've been thinking. This summer, I have two volunteer trips planned. One to Honduras to pass out medical supplies and one to Mexico for a sustainable project. Will I come off as being "privileged"? I shudder at that thought because I am definitely NOT, but everyone knows traveling to developing countries costs a lot of money. I've been living on a budget (home-made lunches, no text messaging, etc.) just so I can go on these trips. I only ask because being privileged completely destroys the story my application builds (which is the truth).

Thanks for your time!

Just mention how you raised the funds in your EC description or an essay and it will make sense.

I agree that mentioning the sacrifices you made to afford these trips would be a reasonable way to go.

Taking honors classes will show up on your transcript. being in the honors program doesn't help at all (as mentioned) in med school applications, but there is some benefit maybe in giving you registration priority and smaller classes.

The difference between effort required for honors and non-honors classes is huge. Considering that you also need to focus on EC's and budgeting for the missionary trips, I would advise against it. It is better to get a 4.0 without honors classes (and university honors) than a <3.7 with honors clases (and maybe no university honors).

Thanks so much, everyone, for your input. It helps me a lot!
