1. Rapid induction with amnesia. Generally now methohexital is used.. Usual IV dose is between 0.5-1.0 mg/kg. Propofol is also commonly used. However propofol is known to raise seizure threshold somewhat.

2. Administer a paralytic. Usually succinylcholine.

3. Often there is pretreatment with a beta blocker for patients with pre-existing hypertension. Often labetolol or esmolol is used.
