If anyone matched in Greenville,NC, and has a few minutes to share any information they might have regarding housing, banking, local schools for the kids, etc, I would be very grateful. Specifically, where is the best area to live and still be fairly close to the hospital? What housing is affordable there on a resident's salary? Thanks to all in advance,

Jules

I'm a fourth year student at ECU. I can't speak about the schools b/c I'm single but if you want to PM me some specific questions I'll be happy to help...

I am familiar with the area as my wife went to school there. It is an up and coming community that has really grown in the past 10 yrs. There are some nice developments that are being built now, but the community just to the east is called Winterville and that is where most of the affordable housing on a resident's salary is being built. The school system could be a little better. Banks in the area are Bank of America and BB&T as well as Wachovia. The area around the hospital is beginning to develop quite a bit with a new shopping center close by as well as some new developments and apartment communities. PM if you have any other specific questions. Thanks

Congratulations! I don't live in Greenville, but I went with my husband for his interview and spent quite a bit of time driving around the area, specifically looking for schools. Bottom line is, people are great, but the schools are iffy. Winterville is definitely your best bet, but after talking to a few residents (randomly, on the street in a few neighborhoods where I drove), there is a huge difference between the different elementary schools. Also, (again, this is based on random conversation with strangers), I was told that for the past few years they have been redistricting each year to keep up with the new construction and to maintain a racial balance in the schools. One woman I spoke to had purchased their house specifically for one of the schools and a year later they were redistricted. Also, (please don't let any of this scare you!) is to check flooding issues. One cul-de-sac I looked at had 4 of the 5 homes for sale. They were nice looking, newer homes and when I asked someone about it, she pointed to the house at the very end of the cul-de-sac and said "they had to get "Mrs. Smith" out of her house by boat after the last hurricane." 😕

Bottom Line: Get a good real estate agent with kids in the area schools and buy flood insurance! there are a lot of private schools in the area too that might be worth checking out.

Enjoy the warm weather next winter when we are all freezing!

I had an interview invite, but did not accept, but I did check out the area on line. There should be a database in NC about the schools, just choose the district with the best elementary, then after you get out of residency you can afford private school and it wont matter. And yes, the area is prone to flooding, so if you buy, make sure you are not in the flood zone. I think the porgram is good. I just could not arrange their interview date around my other interviews. I wanted to go. GL

the last flood here was in '99 I believe. It was one for the ages. As long as you don't live down near the area where the college is (which you wouldn't really want to anyway) then you'll be fine. I did, however, inquire before I bought my place to make sure.

If you want a 1500 sq ft condo with all the extras a mile from the hospital, let me know! 🙂

Pir8DeacDoc, DrRoy, K's Mom, Apache - thank you all so much for the replies.

Pir8DeacDoc - what condos are you refering to? How many bdrms does it have?

So you guys think we should be looking into Winterville. Since we arent buying right now (as far as we know for now), I dont think we can rely on the help of an agent to ask the various questions - like which elementary school is our best bet. And if I try getting this info out of a property management company, well, they're interested in getting their properties rented and might sell a school because of its ties to the area involved (ok, maybe I'm wrong there, but I wasnt sure if asking the management companies would be my safest bet?).

I'll do some searches on Winterville. Is there anything West of the hospital area, or is it all rural with nothing much as far as rentals? I see that the hospital is located in the Northwestern corner of Greenville, and figured something east would mean less traffic and hassle.

Thank you for your help. 😳

Jules

Winterville is a decent option if you are looking to buy. However, for my time and money if I were buying I'd look closer to the hospital. Winterville gives you more bang for your buck but depending on traffic can be a decent little drive to the hospital.

I am a PG2 resident here.

West of the hospital, there really isnt much except for a large rental community (where I currently live.) Living close to the hospital does not have the benefit that it once had, due to the new parking situation secondary to excessive hospital construction.

Winterville or the southwestern part of Greenville would be your best bet. Most of my colleagues that own, live in Winterville.

Congrats, btw.

Not to nit pick but there are plenty of places to buy in West Greenville IMHO. A lot of my classmates that own do so in the western part. Spring Forest Road and the areas surrounding Dickinson have a lot to offer. Much new construction down Dickinson near Star Hill Farm. Down Old Stantonsburg there is Westgate Village and also some duplexes. Down Allen Road there are some places to buy as well.

As I understand it parking isn't really an issue for the residents b/c of the resident parking lot unless you arrive late. Further, if you have to spend extra time to park and ride in from ViQuest wouldn't you want to minimize your commute by living in the western part of town?

Just one man's opinion.

bumping an old thread, but both my brother and sister lived in Greenville for several years (brother did his residency there). My brother and his wife lived in a condo pretty close to the hospital, and there appear to be a ton of those available. It cost them something like $90k and was really nice -- large with 2 bedrooms and 2 baths and a big balcony. My sister and her family lived in the Westhaven neighborhood, which had tons of kids and families. I think it's pricier but worth looking into. When they lived there, their elementary school was Sadie Saulter, which is supposedly not really where you want your kids to go (my niece went there and did well, but they wouldn't have sent my nephew there because he has more issues). I think that's no longer the school for Westhaven, but you might want to beware of that elementary. People actually moved to get their kids into different schools.

Thanks exlawgrrl. If you happen to talk to your brother or sister, see if they remember which schools were known to have been good choices there. Its really hard to try to arrange to rent a place when we're several States away. All of this advice has been great, minimizes the stress. Thanks again.
