I have finally started as an ED scribe which I know is no big deal but the process was somewhat more involved than expected and feels like a good step in the right direction. My questions are about shadow opportunities through this position to anyone who has experience or advice. From what I gathered this position counts as shadowing in itself to some extent, however would it be abnormal to ask certain physicians as I become more familiar with them to shadow them on shifts outside of the job? Or would it be possible to familiarize myself to specialists who frequent the ER and ask to shadow them for different perspectives. Finally, how long should I work under a particular doc before asking for a letter of rec. or is that just a subjective/situational call? Thx!

Congrats on getting started! Scribing is like shadowing on steroids; I didn't feel the need to shadow the ER providers I worked with outside of my shifts. Eventually I did ask them if they knew others who were willing to be shadowed, and through that shadowed some trauma surgeons. So it's possible to take advantage of the network! You'll work with many physicians, almost always a different one for each shift rather than the same one for more than a day, so give it a few months to get acquainted with their personalities and work styles. Then approach whoever you feel you get along best with and could vouch for your work performance.
