ED vs LD

hey guys!!

I was gonna volunteer this summer and just wanted your opinion on something.

I have the option of volunteering at the Emergency dept. or Labor and Delivery.

This position is for patient interaction. That's how the coordinator has designed it too. Which one should I go with?

I mean ED will give me more exposure...but I really do not think I will have much to do. Those 4 hours can feel like 40....

I rarely see LD on an application but ED volunteers are a dime a dozen. LD would set you apart and I guarantee it would be a topic of conversation at almost every interview due to its novelty.

My only other thought.... if you like old folks, do ED. If you prefer to be around people your own age, do LD. If you don't mind mostly sad situations with spark of joy once in awhile, do ED. If you prefer mostly happy occasions with a little really horrible grief on rare occasion, then do LD.

I think I want something a little "happy" this time. Last time, the oncology department really emotionally drained me. I will go with LD. Thank you LizzyM.

I would def go with L&D...like LizzyM says it will be a great conversation starter and you may come out having seen some things that most other matriculating students haven't... besides if the mood catches you, you can always go back and do ED volleying

Since women tend to labor for hours, I'd think L&D would give you a lot of chance to get to know the patients and also give you a good peek at the long hours doctors work!

When i went through paramedic rotations, we were required to do 2-3 days of ob/gyn. The idea of course being that if at least if you hadn't delivered a baby, you had seen the presentation and the progression of labor and delivery...it was definitely an interesting rotation and gave me a lot of respect for the amount of time the ob/gyn's had to spend at the hospital
