Do you happen to have that mentioned list? It would be extremely helpful to have it looked over.

Also, I was thinking of professional services as well, just cause they might be able to work on word replacements and all.

I've never utilized them... but they're so expensive, Idk if they're worth it.

I think you can find a lot of good, free help with your essays, be it SDN or friends/classmates who have applied to medical school.
 
They are very expensive. I mean I'm ok with paying but when it gets to 5k. That's a but nutty there.

My school has a writing center that will edit your papers - even papers submitted via e-mail. Maybe your school does too -- ask around...

I have been out of school for almost 2 years. Wasn't gonna go to med school given that I have a good job and it pays well but the calling is pounding harder each day. 🙁

Well, then you definitely still have the (admittedly less reliable in that you don't know who we are) SDN community here for ya!

I don't see a reason as why not hahaha. Sometimes only step that you have left is taking the leap of faith.

For the most part, the "regular posters" here on SDN are trustworthy and will give you good, honest feedback (look for large post counts). I'm willing to help, as well, even though I'm not listed on that other thread (I'm an accepted candidate -- so I might know a thing or two! :writer:)

This is what I wanted to know. How can you tell who you can trust? I've seen some threads where people volunteer to edit but then in other threads these same people mention they're still pre med and still applying.

Doesn't the official SDN PS editor thread require that editors have at least been accepted at a medical school even if they may still be premed?

That is what I thought but shenellica does have a point, some of the editors are still "pre-med" I am not sure if it is due to the fact that they have forgotten to update their status or is it that anyone can do it?

I thought anyone could do it, but that fact did not bother me last year....who cares if someone is a premed and editing your essay? A premed is no different from a medical student when it comes to medical school application/essay advice if that premed has been accepted....if anything, the premed is closer to the process you are about to go through. Whether or not said student is a good writer is a totally different story 😉

You do have a solid point though. I mean I am sure there are excellent writers out there who are also trying to gain entrance to med school as well. I have nothing against this. In your opinion, who is a good one to get help from? Thanks! 🙂

Whether or not you can trust a stranger on the internet is a valid question but why would their pre-med status matter? A lot of people around here are nontrads who have worked and write at their jobs for a living. Some of the premeds aren't science majors. I leaned primarily on a handful of friends for editing my essays, and my main editor was actually a younger sib who was a humanities major.

Professional editing services are a waste of money, IMO. The best editor is going to be someone who is a good writer and knows you well (for example, I have a tendency in my essays to downplay my accomplishments and come off bland. Who better than a sibling to catch that?). For overall content questions SDN is a good place to ask as well to make sure something is an appropriate topic for your PS or a diversity essay, etc.

Oh no, if the person is accepted then he or she could be trustworthy. I guess i'm not talking about the "official" list but I've seen threads where people are like "please help me with my PS" and random people seem to offer help. I mean no one would really be mean enough to offer help if he or she isn't qualified. I'd hope not. I just wouldn't want to send my work to someone who could still be working on his own statement.

Edit: I guess my question would be for those who do seek editing help on sdn:

A. Do you send your statement to everyone who offers to help or

B. Do you have some requirements for those that you decide to use (like post count)

Someone who has the time to look over your writing more than once...I found it more helpful to have a few people looking over your PS, not twenty, and I asked them to stick with it for a while. Make sure to find someone who doesn't know you well, like an sdn user, so they can read your PS without having he luxury of filling in the blanks as someone who knows you will. You want the opinion of someone who only knows what you write, just like an adcom.
 
That is really good advise. Have you gone through this process before? 🙂
