Is the EDP process the same for DO as MD? Basically, can I only apply to one school and wait until acceptance/rejection before continuing?

Can I apply EDP to a DO and an MD school (as what I read states that allopathic restricts you from applying to other allopathic, but mentions nothing about osteopathic)?

Is EDP basically only a smart choice if I'm relatively certain I'll be accepted?

Yes the system is the same, and you are only allowed to apply to one MEDICAL school EDP (MD or DO).

As for smart choice, I think it is best if you are confident you could get in and it is your 1st choice by a long ways. Remember that if you get accepted EDP you HAVE to attend there or nowhere for the school year.

No, if you apply to MD EDP, you can still apply to as many Osteopathic schools as you want.

I wouldn't apply EDP to a DO school, then EDP to a MD school.

I think that applying EDP to ONE type, then regular applying to the other is ok.

Besides, I think only ATSU-KCOM and 1 other DO school (I think VCOM?) have EDP.

Dont normally challenge posts on here but do you have a source that supports this?

AAMC states 'only one US medical school'

VCOM states 'no other medical school'

Your position could be construed to mean that MD != DO if the term "medical school" doesn't apply across the board.

You could have used the search function, but okay: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=819440 AAMC can only regulate LCME schools. The same should apply the other way around.

There are more sources if you search if this is not satisfying for you.

One, SDN is NOT a source.

Two, in order to apply EDP you have to agree that you will "apply to only one US Medical School". It is not a matter of AAMC's scope, it is a matter of ethics if you agree to that guideline and then violate it.

I didn't say that AAMC can stop you; but I stand by the statement that you are not supposed to.

There are sources within that text and within other threads that you're welcome to search for yourself. You're also welcome to call AAMC yourself if you're in doubt, but please don't argue for the sake of arguing.

EDP is basically only a smart choice if you are relatively certain you want to attend NO other schools. If you are hoping for an early decision, or an edge to a school, it isn't worth it. Just apply really early and EDP isn't necessary. If you are certain that KCOM (for example) is your number one school, you can try, but unless you are from Kirksville or have family from Kirksville, you need to be sure you can live in Kirksville. This applies for the other schools you might be interested in EDP for. But remember, if you don't get in EDP, you could have applied super early to all your schools and gotten in somewhere else almost as early.

I agree. I also think it forces you not to apply to other schools until after a certain date, so you have to weigh the risks and benefits of that.
