I know this is another one of those new programs that not a lot of people have experience with, but I thought it was worth asking about. From what I understand from the few websites I've found, it looks like the Army Reserve is offering guaranteed stabilization for 2-4 years while enrolled in school as an enlistment benefit. Does anyone have good info on this new program? Also, if I were to go this option, I would most likely want to be released from the Army Reserves after I finished my degree so that I could attend medical school, either USUHS or HPSP. Does anyone know if joining under this new provision would make it harder for me to be released from service? Also, do us prior service people qualify for it? It looks like it has extra education benefits also...would we be able to get those ALONG with the New GI Bill? I'm currently Active Duty, so would I have to officially separate and transfer to the IRR before I could do this? Any information is appreciated! 🙂

I know when I got out of the Army in WA State this past February the 2 years stabilization was just an added 'bonus' to your contract, but was only available to those who joined prior to leaving the service. I would contact your NG recruiter and discuss the terms.... they also had a deal to reduce your ADSO by 50% if you joined, which was a great if you wanted to reduce a bunch of IRR time and were unsure about how long you wanted to stay in.
However... I don't see why it would make it any harder to stay in - for this scenario... just because it was part of the contract, not with additional strings. That being said the first general officer theoretically could wave that and you could be 'un-stabilized' anyhow.. not likely at all... but always good to know.
And in my scenario YES you had to join prior to signing out of the army in order to take part of the 'deal'. Each post should have a NG POC / recruiter as part of your out-processing list.. i'd give them a call!
good luck

Thanks for the info! I had actually heard that this was an option for regular enlistment, so if it's actually something I have to sign up for before separating, that is good info to have. I'll be deployed until a couple months before I get out, but I'm sure I can find contact info somewhere online. You can find anything on the internet these days. 🙂

SGT STAR 😛: "Education Career Stabilization (ECS) is an innovative new enlistment program for the Army Reserve. Soldiers enlisting in this program are members of their local Reserve unit. They attend weekend battle assemblies and annual training. The difference is that they enlist for a 2-, 3-, or 4-year mobilization deferment or stabilization period in lieu of cash enlistment bonuses. This allows them to complete their higher education before they are subject to deployment. Applicants are eligible for the student loan repayment program in addition to the Selected Reserve Montgomery GI Bill. Soldiers are only mobilization deferred for Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom but may volunteer to deploy, with no penalty, if their unit is called up during their deferment. For additional information, view this page."
