So I am going to Edward AFB to be a pharmacist. Does anyone know what the pharmacist does at Edwards? Also what is there to do at Edwards? It's near Lancaster, CA. I looked, and i can buy a house there for 60K. So I'm sure its in the middle of nowwhere.

You seriously took a job without knowing what you will be doing from day to day? wow!

My wife's a pharmacy manager in the Antelope Valley, so I know that area well.

Edwards's AFB is located north of Los Angeles in the Antelope Valley (western Mojave Desert). It's high desert, so snow at times in the winter with high winds, and 120F+ in the summers. However, I really like visiting the area for many reason. Lots of old mines, and some cool parks. Red Rocks County park is a magical place-just visit and you'll know what I mean. Beautiful rock formations that you can climb, and endless trails through the desert. However, everything pricks, pulls, or has venom in the Mojave. Even the grasses impregnate your hands with thin fibers if you happen to fall upon a tuffet.

You see daily cargo and fighter jets playing high in the sky all day, every day. Lots of cool attack helicopters too. Very high crime rate in both Lancaster and Palmdale. Quartz Hills west of the 14 freeway is considered the 'Beverly Hills' of the AV, and the homes are amazing. My advice is to live in a gate community in the AV, or live, like many others south in the Valencia/Canyon Country area.

Edwards is actually north of Lancaster quite a few miles. It's near Rosamond (head west of the 14 to the Tropico Mine Rd to see the famous Tropico Gold Mine), and there are number of new, nice homes in Rosamond for a relatively cheap price.

Good things about the place? The 14 freeway is almost always free flowing, lots of open desert to buy, and some cool places. The AV is heavily populated on both sides of the 14, and there is every store imaginable including malls.

Feel free to contact me for further information.

I have no idea what the pharmacist does at Edwards but maybe it is like Luke where I volunteered. The civilian pharmacist basically sat at the computer and verified all day. It was pretty laid back and the dress code of the pharmacists seemed to be jeans and T-shirts though one wore scrubs. They almost never counseled and they never had to deal with insurance issues. The ones I talked to who previously worked retail said it was so much better. In fact, in the time I volunteered which wasn't a huge amount of hours I admit, I never saw anyone get mad at the pharmacist. So maybe it will be like that.

But didn't you ask what you would be doing before you took the job?

I picked 3 bases all around LA and this was the one I got. And what ever base I get now, I will be at another one in 3-4 years doing something else. Like they say, I will be a captain in the AF first then a pharmacist. I'm hoping to go to elmendorf in Alaska for my next base. So in 4 years you will see another post asking "Does anyone know what the pharmacist does in Elmendorf?"

Grew up in south central AK. Been on Elmendorf for their annual airshows. Not sure what the pharmacists do there on a daily basis, but an outdoor lover's dream!

Well, this information is different than what your original question states. Being a CPT in the Air Force at a military installation is much different than being a regular civilain pharmacist at an AF base. You will more than likely be put into a leadership position right away. You're days can vary based on how busy or slow your facility is. You are much better off contacting your sponsor (mentor) at Edwards to know what you are getting into. If you do not have a sponsor yet, call Edwards, ask for the pharmacy department and ask to speak with the chief. When it comes time in 3-4 years to PCS, you will know people and will ask your military peers, "what is XXX air force base like" and your answers will be better.

By the way, Elmendorf is awesome. One of my close friends is the chief there.
