I really liked CWRU, and it is a top 25 school. With Step 1 P/F, school prestige seems to be more important now. The match list at Case is extremely impressive overall. However, I received a 40,000 total merit scholarship at Einstein + the tuition is already cheaper. Is CWRU worth a ~100k difference in total cost compared to Einstein, which has a less impressive match list? CWRU would end up at about 100k per year. I would not mind matching back into the Northeast but also would prefer to move down South.

Had to make a similar decision myself! I really like Case, but it’s not worth a 100K difference (+ interest). Einstein is a good program with a really impressive match list. While they do primarily match into the NE, which is probably a result of student preference, they do have matches into the West coast and the South. For these reasons, I’d go to Einstein and take the merit scholarship. They also have cheap housing available for students.

Would say that Case has a certain but slight edge as a program and in regards to prestige, but as apple jacks said, I don’t think it’s worth 100k. Einstein is still a really good school and is probably just as or more respected than Case in the NYC area. Plenty of good residency options there and certainly wouldn’t disqualify you from the South. The northeast dominant match list is certainly a mix of local reputation and connections combined w student preference.

Hi all, I visited Einstein and thought it was really nice overall! The one thing that is still making this decision tough for me is that I am interested in a competitive specialty and CWRU would give me a slight edge in that regard + has no AOA. However, I know competitive specialties are quite hard to match and that I could always change my mind later in my medical school career. Is the 100k difference worth the slight edge with Step 1 P/F in this case?

Wait is this 100k in total over the entirety of med school or per year(meaning 400k in total). If it is the latter, then I heavily favor Einstein because it honestly saves you so much money and Einstein is still a great school. But it’s the former, honestly Einstein won’t close many doors that Case opens. And 100k is still quite a lot, so don’t think you don’t have a chance for a competitive speciality if you choose Einstein. Honestly, you really can’t go wrong with either. Congrats!!!

Either way, you can definitely still match competitive specialties from Einstein. Look at their match lists (every year a handful of neurosurgery, ortho, etc). You’re going to have to work hard at either program. 100K total with interest is not worth going to Case with an alternative like Einstein imo.

I'm also opting for another less prestigious school as opposed to Case because of the price. At the end of the day it comes down to the student taking advantage of the opportunities around them, and you will certainly have plenty of opportunities at Einstein (which is another great school)! Case is great but it is certainly not worth that price tag when you have another awesome school as an option.

So it’s ~100k total! I actually re-negotiated the merit aid after the first offer (40k total) to now 51k total. The tuition difference between the two schools is already a bit over 10k per year, so that’s another 40k and housing at Einstein is extremely cheap (500 per month), so I’m looking at ~112k difference.

Also, thank you all for your help!

Wondering if anyone in med school or residency can chime in real quick if there is a huge advantage at case for the match. Otherwise, I think the decision is clear

Hi! Einstein MS3 here. Feel free to dm but whatever competitive specialty you are thinking of you will definitely be able to match if you are passionate about it. We have in-house programs in all specialties and good mentors that will make calls if you show continued interest in the field. The same goes for Case I am sure.

Einstein is a great school with great matches throughout the country and 112k cheaper. Go there. There is no tangible prestige advantage argument to be made here.
