Einstein
Pros

  • Higher ranked (T40 vs T70)
  • Students seem generally happier there
  • Slightly safer community
  • True P/F

Cons

  • Relatively isolated location (I've heard this as a common complaint among students)
  • Less diversity (doesn't bother me much, but may have unforeseen consequences as an AA)

NJMS
Pros

  • In-state tuition makes it about 56k cheaper, they're also more generous with aid
  • Dream school since I was young
  • Easier to get to manhattan, Closer to home/friends/family (but I'm not afraid to step out of my comfort zone

Cons

  • Newark is slightly less safe
  • Fewer opportunities for new experiences (same ugrad, may have to live near parents)

I would question your notion that Einstein is not as diverse of a student / patient population. It's very diverse. Agree, the Morris Park area is better than Newark. For me, if the 56k difference is total over 4 years, I'd choose Einstein. Better school. More opportunities when it comes to residency.

I would go with NJMS personally. They are both top half MD schools and you could save a boatload with in-state tuition. Do you live close or close to a train station to NJMS? You could even live with parents and offload so many of your issues while you study. Lots of my friends who stayed with parents would do the eye roll at having to do so, but they all talked about the benefits of free housing and food and laundry. Two or three less things to do when you are drinking from the fire hose.

David D was my mcat instructor for a kaplan class and now I am a doctor, look how time flies. I think your cons are not as significant. NJMS is not true pass/fail, they have an internal ranking for AOA and deans letter. I think David D contributed to lots of their pre-clinical teaching study guides/videos, etc, if I am not wrong, so he may have a bias. Bottom line, for you, I do not think you can go wrong with either. NJMS does diversity really well in terms of attracting minority students and their patient population at UH is mainly minority/under-served. Most of my friends there chose NJMS over other schools for this very reason and some stayed on for residency and they felt supported (probs the best in state med for DEI).

Einstein is a higher ranking and does have some more research opportunities than NJMS in some departments (I call them Montefiore). I second the living near family/friends as useful/cost-saving or you could live by yourself/with roomates in jersey city/hoboken as a tradeoff for the reduced tuition and financial aid if that is important to you and helps you study better. Classmates at NJMS are mainly from instate and many at NJMS go straight through from 7 year BAMD programs so they are a little cliquey since they all have been together for 10+ years when all is said and done. Einstein's class is likely from more all over since NYC was a draw for many across the country. I would vote NJMS here for you too since NJMS is close to NYC for social life, etc and you can certainly match well into NYC for residency.

most students do not live in newark they live in jersey city/surrounding areas/some commute from home and lots of hospitals are at the private sites (morristown, hackensack, barnabas livingson). car required here.
