A crossed aldol reaction between ethanal and propanal gives how many products that are structural isomers?
A. 1
B. 2
C. 3
D. 4
The answer is D
My question is aren't structural isomers supposed to have the same molecular formula? This reaction can provide the following possibilities:
E + E (4 carbon product)
E + P (5 carbon product)
P + P (6 carbon product)
P + E (5 carbon product)
So there are four products formed, but aren't only 2 are structural isomers (the 5 carbon products)?
What are the four structural isomers??
A. 1

C. 3
D. 4
