ek 1001: when do you use figures/equations to answer questions?

hi! i don't get when we should use equations that are given as opposed to simply intuition.

for example:

there's an image given in ek 1001 gen chem (thermodynamics chapter) #322-327.

it's a photo of six blocks of different shapes touching each other. it's asking about:

where is temperature greatest to smallest?
when is heat flow the greatest?
what has the greatest temperature difference?

we do have an equation that has rate flow proportional to area, temperature change and inversely proportional to length.

using this i thought that heat flow was greatest in the block of greatest area, but the answer says that it's constnat throughout all 6 slabs.

i thought that temperature was greatest in the slab with the lowest length but it says that because heat is flowing from left to right, the order is not what i thought.

BUT for the question asking for the block that experiences the greatest temperature change, they finally use the equation.

WHY NOW?????????
