Which of the following is a possible application of an electrochemical cell?
I. A voltage source
II. A pH meter
III. A device for disolving a gold bar and electroplating the ions onto a nickel bar.

From what I understand, an electrochemical cell can refer to both a 'galvanic' cell and an 'electrolytic' cell (see pg 120 EK inorganic chem)

So shouldn't the answer be I, II, and III?

how would a ph meter work?

i do agree on I and III tho

The ph changes as the molecule becomes more electron withdrawn. For example, say a nitrogen has three flourines attached to it, would that make the delta positive bigger? YES! Therefore, it is going to be very acidic. Then, somehow there is rearrangement of the molecule due to treatment, so the nitrogen is in a more stable form. This would make it slighltly less acidic. This is just some ways the ph meter is handy. Sorry if I didn't answer the question btw 🙂
