I'm not understanding the reasoning for D over B. Doesn't B answer the question asked? My reasoning is that B shows that Kettlewell's experiments led to an incorrect expected geographical distribution and thus there is a discrepancy since the geographic distribution was wrong. Since birds see differently, Kettlewell's whole experiment is backwards which explains why dark moths were found when they weren't expected.

(I'm writing the question out since the numbering varies by edition.)

8. The passage suggests that the discrepancies in the expected geographical distribution of melanic moths can actually be attributed to:

B. (incorrect) differences between the way humans and birds see, which Kettlewell was not aware of.

D. (correct) This information is not provided.

I incorrectly answered "B" also. In trying to figure out how D can be right, I've come up with the following: The question speaks of a "discrepancy," discrepancies have more than one side. Is this discrepancy between Kettlewell's hypothesis and the truth? Eyesight would explain Kettlewell's hypothesis. (B's right so far.) However, eyesight cannot explain the results of Kettlewell's experiment (in paragraph 2). So, something else must be going on (B is not the full story).

IMO, this was a ridiculously hard question. I'm not sure that my thinking is right....
