I have an elective coming up and would like to do something business-related and wanted to see what ideas there are.

I will be graduating from a residency in I.M. and will be working as a hospitalist thereafter. I have plans to start 1 or more businesses (non-medically related) after I graduate, which I would not be able to really justify working on during a medicine elective. I also have a number of ideas regarding medical businesses, but have no actual business experience. I would like to do an elective in an area that would expose me to other possibilities (instead of doing just another medicine/subspecialty elective) and hopefully be a springboard for something bigger. After I graduate, I plan on starting joint ventures with people who have business experience and can provide some of the skills necessary.

The other possibility would be to take a course but I don't think any are structured in a 1-month block which is how medical electives work.

Bumping this old thread because I am a current med student with similar ideas and the same types of questions.

Try a short internship with a medical startup? My sister, an MD, has a consulting business doing drug trials and has participated at various levels in the companies, from just consultant to IPO. Work for a law firm for a month that does health care law? You might learn a lot there too. Just food for thought. I think you are going to have to make your own course. What kind of "joint ventures" are you thinking about? Just curious what you are looking for, since practicing medicine is certainly a business all by itself. It makes sense to me that if you are in medicine you would want to build and sell a practice and then do it again. This is the way most business people think.

My major interest is in product and service development (on a smaller scale than entire practices). Basically taking a medically-related idea and executing it. However my formal education has not involved business development principles, so I am hoping to "learn the ropes" at least in the context of healthcare entrepreneurialism. I do intend to maintain clinical activity.

I offer an elective rotation at my company (Medical Communications Media) where you can learn about the medical communications/education/publishing industry. My elective has no affiliation with an academic medical institution.

I know that Dr. Maria Chandler at the UC Irvine offers an elective at her institution. She is the president of the MD/MBA Association.

I find that many medical schools that offer the dual MD/MBA degree may also have elective opportunities for medical students interested in business.
