Hey all,

I've developed an interest in Psychiatry recently (I'm an M2 currently) and was hoping to get your take on 3rd electives in Psych.

Here's the deal. My school offers a 2 week elective during M3 year (that I can stretch to 4 wks b/c of vacation) but I'd like to take it elsewhere or in something other than straight Psych - partly b/c my school's not that well known for it and partly b/c I'll be taking a required 6 wks in Psych later in 3rd year anyway.

So, any recommendations for good electives or good places to try Psych out? I'm in NJ so anything around here, NYC or Minneapolis (family out there) to recommend? Also, maybe there's another elective that would give me some psych exposure - someone suggested nephrology to me as they work alot with psychosocial issues re: dialysis patients plus I'll get some more Medicine skillz.

Sorry for the long post but I'd really be interested in getting some advice from you wonderful guys and gals. 😍

I also recommend nephrology and gi, as they have a lot of psych overlap.

Agree... Endocrine & Family Practice practice also have psyche overlap.

Chronic pain/Pain Management has some overlap though IMHO not much.

ER has a lot of psyche overlap.

Psyche electives?--NJ
Atlantic Regional Medical Center (one of the hospitals I work at) has a great involuntary unit but there's currently no 1st or 2nd years there, nor will be unti July 2007. I wouldn't do an elective there until then because the attendings won't teach much if you're a medstudent. You really need some good resident interaction.

Cooper Hospital has a voluntary unit.

New Brunswick/Piscataway, New Jersey Med school in Newark, UMDNJ Stratford, Bergen Regional Medical Center all have psyche programs. You might be able to do an elective there.

An awesome rotation in Psychiatry is available at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN. The wards are very busy with a wide variety of pathology. The students have a lot of responsibility. You will do admission H&P's independently on a daily basis. You will also write orders with resident supervision. The lectures are good and most of the attendings are excellent(3 of my attendings offered to write letters of recommendation). You will be busier than on most psych rotations, often working 10+ hour days. However, the experience will leave you better prepared for your psych. internship. Also, you will improve you chances at landing a spot in the HCMC/Regions residency program if you would choose to apply.

If you're interested in an elective that's closely related to psychiatry, but also somewhat unique, the Center for Victims of Torture in Minneapolis offers a medical student elective ( I think credit is given through U of Minnesota Med School).

Could also try a psych subspecialty/niche area if your school allows that before your general psych rotation. My school offers child psych and prison psych. What about an alcohol/drub rehab outpatient center? You could also see if you could do an anesthesia rotation and do only/mostly ECT cases (if your gas department is flexible.)
Our hospital also has a health psychology section. If yours does, you could see if they ever take med students, since you help people deal with the psych issue of disease on all the wards (variety of patients.)
