If doing a 4th elective Ophtho rotation in Oct.-Nov. ish, is it common or acceptable to ask to leave for interviews? Would it be better to do a Ophtho rotation during this time frame, or stay with a flexible non-ophtho rotation that will allow me to leave for interviews?

Is it an away rotation? I would definitely not leave an away rotation to go on an interview. That being said there are only a select few programs that interview late October/early Nov. The majority of programs start interviewing after Nov 12. My suggestion would be to take Ophtho much earlier in the year and schedule a random elective during October-November instead just in case you want to go on interviews.

I would recommend NOT leaving an away rotation for an interview, as this is bad form. As stated above, there are a handful of programs that interview in October (i.e. Wilmer, UTSW, Baylor, Yale, and maybe some others), but the majority begin mid-November. I would schedule time-off or a rotation where you can miss a ton of days from mid-November through mid-December (~15th).

If you are going to do a rotation in October and November, I would look at this past year's interview thread to get an idea for the approximate interview dates and decide if those are programs of interest. If so, I would think twice about another ophtho interview then.
