A "high pass" is hardly a bad grade, and probably doesn't really need "making up for." The clerkship grade is just one datapoint that they take a look at, along with your other 3rd year grades, step score, interview, sub-I grade, letters, etc.
It probably depends on the elective and where you're applying. If you're doing an away rotation at the place you want to go, and you get stellar comments and impress everyone, it may get your foot in the door. It may hold less sway elsewhere, and unless you're absolutely brilliant on that rotation it probably won't make a huge difference. But as Spurs mentioned, a high pass isn't a black mark at all.
