I'm a mechanical engineer and I am leaving my current job to go back to school and get the pre-reqs required for medical school (I'm 23). Basically, my problem is I still need to take Bio II (A&P) and Orgo I and II (minimally).

Ideally, I'd also like to take Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Immunology, and Neurology if I can. However, these electives have Bio II and Orgo as the pre-reqs.

My original plan was to take a lot of these electives because they all sound so interesting. But if I don't have the pre-reqs to enable me to register for these classes can I take them during my application year? Is it common to go in for an interview for a med school and explain that you are still taking electives since you couldn't sign up for them the previous year?

I don't want it to look like I am only taking the bare minimum to get in with only picking up Orgo and Bio II (all the other required pre-med courses were covered in my M.E. program).

I know those who've taken the MCAT prior to finishing Pre-Req's.

I would focus my electives on Microbio, cell bio and biochem. those 3 will cover enough immuno to get you by. Skip the neuro. Immuno would be fine, but Genetics would be better.

Ps. Engineers to well in Med school.

Well, for nontrads it's the norm to be taking classes during application year, so I don't see why it would be odd for a nontrad to be doing the same. You can definitely update schools with your current classes when the time comes.

I know what you mean about not wanting to be seen as doing the minimum, as I've only taken one upper level during my postbacc. I'm torn between TFing gen chem next year or taking one elective each term.
