I just finished my 3rd year and a 4 week em elective, and I definately want to go into em. For those of you who know about this, (1) what are the electives I should do in order to be best prepared for em? (2) what are the best electives to do that would look good for program directors? (3) would it be a good idea to do medicine and/or surgery sub-I, or would it be better to use those 4 weeks on some other elective?

I did tox, cardiology, and derm, and an emergency radiology elective tha tmy school offered. I've heard a lot of toher suggestions and I would post on the EM forum to get their view. You could also consider anesthesia, but if you do that, get them to show you how to do different nerve blocks. I'd also consider orthopedics, but try to stay out of the OR in the elective. You could also consider ICU or PICU (can never see enough sick kids). One attending suggested nephrology, but I haven't heard much of that elsewhere.

As for sub-I, 90% of emergency medicine is medicine, not surgery. You're better off with a medical sub-I than a surgical one.
