How useful would be an elective (done in final year of medical school) be for lor if I can only apply 2 years after graduation ( due to scholarship ties)? Or is a observership done near application period More useful? Thanks

Electives are essential as you can be evaluated clinically, observerships are not.

Do as many as electives as you can in fields relevant to the specialty you want and also at places you want to go to or cities you want to end up in or at very prestigious schools as a last resort.

Electives are the most important even if they will be 3 years old. You will want to ideally do both but an elective that is 3 years old with a LoR trumps a more recent observership.
