Hey guys, I recently got my elective schedule and I'm trying to find out what the best game plan is.

I'm a US Citizen and in 2013 I'll be entering my final year of med school at a non-Caribbean university. I've got my Step 1 score in hand and I just found out that I should have 12 weeks available for electives and I'm interested in matching into Anesthesiology.

I just have a few questions and I appreciate any help!

1) As far as finding out what programs that I can apply to for rotations, I've gone the route of FREIDA and going through the list of residency programs in Chicago offering Anesthesiology residencies and checking their electives. Unfortunately, that only yielded 2 programs that look at non-US med students for electives. Is there any way to find out if there are other teaching hospitals out there that might be offering electives in Anesthesia? Or is that it?

2) Reading around, I've come across the term "Greenbook" rotations. I'm fuzzy on the concept, but is this something that I should be paying attention to? I see that it basically applies to core rotations and not electives, but I don't want anything to bite me down the line.

3) As a potential Anesthesia applicant, are there any certain electives that I should be aiming for to improve my application? I.e. should I just try and do all my 12 weeks in Anesthesia or would mixing in some critical care and pain management make a difference?

4) On a similar note, do you guys think an applicant whos done 3 months in Anesthesia is more favorable than an applicant thats maybe done 2 months there and 1 in say Radiology? Obviously LORs come into play, but outside of that does it matter? Just wondering since I have a residence in Chicago, so I'd prefer taking them all there as opposed to going out of state, but I might be able to improve my chances by applying to multiple electives in Chicago.

Thanks a lot guys!

Yeah, I went through that link as well. Is there any way to find out what community hospitals might be offering electives in affiliation with universities? Or would most of those just schedule them through the universities?
