electives

not too familiar with psychiat residency.what kind of electives can you guys do. can you do neurology, or neuropsych?

Several months (I believe it's 2) of neurology are required for psych residents. Most psychiatry residencies will allow a resident to do an extra month of neurology as an elective.

2 months of neuro is required intern year. Also, 4 months of some combination of inpatient/outpatient medicine, ER, or peds is required. Beyond that, I think it is all psych. Not sure about neuropsych, may be program dependent.

The 2 months of neuro doesn't actually have to be in the intern year, just sometime during training. (UNC for example, has one month in the intern year and one month in the 4th year). Of course, 2 months in the 1st year is the most common setup.

Although it varies by program, electives can be relatively open, determined by the resident. At one program I know of, even the medicine months include an elective, so the resident can do cardiology, or ICU, or rheumatology, or palliative care, or whatever.

At the same program, I met a resident who has an interest in psychosomatic medicine, who did a neuroradiology elective. So I guess, depending upon the program, you can do nearly any kind of elective you want if you can justify it.
