I figured this might be the best place to ask.

What's the word? The leading brands seem to be Oral B and Sonicare, and it seems like everyone loves them. Are they worth the money, and if so which is reccomended? I do have sensitive gums and a couple of places where the gumline has receeded, so does that mean I shouldn't use one (I haven't seen my peridontist in a while because I've been away at school)? I use Sonicare elite and LOVE it. It has reduced my plaque score tremendously! I recommend it to everyone that is in the market for a powered toothbrush simply because I have used most of them, and in my opinion sonicare was the best!!!!!!!!!!

Cool, thanks for the reccomendation. People review it very highly. The only thing that the Oral B brush had that I liked was the sensor that stopped the brush if you used too much pressure.

Is the sonicare easy on your gums?

ya you should use the Oral-B one....but also massage your gums at least once,ideally twice a day specially where the gun-line is recedding.It increases the local blood supply and prevents further recession.

You might also want to use the inter-dental brush to prevent food lodgement in between the teeth and also restores the col or the gingiva in between the teeth,which is "non-keratinised" and hence very susceptible to infection.

Thank you. I've been told about the gum stimulating with stimudents, and should probably do it. I do floss once a day as well as rinse with salt water twice a day, which my periodontist suggested.

I read a recent article in the ADA's professional journal which said that the rotating-oscillating toothbrush are the best kind of toothbrush (manual or electric) on the market. Rotating-oscillating are the type that don't completely spin (i.e. they rotate 90 degrees in one direction and then reverse and rotate 180 degrees in the other direction). I'm not sure which brands market these type.

They also found that not all electronic toothbrushes are better than their manual counterparts. In fact, they found that some electric toothbrushes are worse than manual toothbrushes.

I disagree, I got a free oral B brush and hated it. Get the sonicare and you will see results!!!

that's what the Oral-b brushes do. I love mine and would recommend it to others.

we got free sonicare and oral b and i like them both. True I think Sonicare is nicer and more fun to use... i like the oral b far more than the traditional brush. my 2 cents...

i own a sonicare for about 2 years and i just recently got a oral-b

to tell you the truth, i like oral-b more

and honestly i don't like philips sonicare's aggressive advertising tactic, seems like that's all they do

Good point! I like to do the ole manual way ever other day or so! It seems as though you know you do a good job!

They do over do it on the advertising, but you can't blame them. Sonicare has a high frequency, which is brushing strokes per second and high amplitude which is their wide sweeping motion. This is the ONLY brush with both these, for they have the patent based on them.

The American Academy of Orthodontics just endorsed sonicare as the best toothbrush for people with orthodontic care. The implant people also say that sonicare can increase the life of your implant!!!!!

Check the stats, you will be pleased with the sonicare, just get the elite, I think its the best. I have had both the advance and the elite!

Quite an endorsement! Thanks, that's a huge help. I was looking at the Elite 7300, but was worried it would be hell on my gums, which generally hurt.

havent tried the oral B
but i have to say its hard to imagine anything beating my sonicare
i got it when i got braces put on - its the only thing that i will ever use!

once or twice i spent the night w/out it and had to use a manual brush- those gross me out now, it just feels so much less efficient
the only thing about the sonicare i dont like is that it took a while to get used to all that vibration (which i now like) - also, water tends to collect inside the handle, you have to unscrew the brush end and rinse it out daily or it could get nasty.
on the plus side, the battery lasts forever, you can really travel for several days w/out bringing the recharger w/you
sonicare feels so good, i have done the disclosing tablet test - WAY better than manual brush
another thing w/braces on, flossing is a royal pain in the rear - i dont feel horribly bad for skipping a day because of my sonicare

yar of all those many studies and comparisons out there... i think i'll go with the one by consumer report. it's probably the least biased one.
but i think the last time they compared power toothbrush was back in 98... so i'm hoping they do another one sometime soon.

The best thing I like about the electric brushes is it guarantees that I'm brushing for the right amount of time, and if I cycle the brush over the teeth equally for each period I know I'm not concentration on any one tooth and ignoring another. As far as brushing goes, though, manual or electric are both efficient. It all depends on what you do with it.

Both the Oral B and Sonicare are the best out there. They're both essentially on par with each other. Some like the prophy type brushing (Oral-B), others like the sweeping type (Sonicare). Either way, make sure you follow the directions in the manual, otherwise you're causing more harm than good.

If imitation is the sincerest form of flatery, the fact that my local Oral-B rep dropped off a few free new models of Oral b's new SONIC brush should say alot 😱 This is the same rep who a year ago absolutely trashed the sonicare and all sonic technology brushes 🙄

I have about 200 patients/patient families in my practice that are Sonicare users, and I'll tell you their overall perio condition is excellent and that encompasses patients from age 8 to 80, whp started with everything from horrible perio to very good perio. My partner and I believe in them so much, that we sell them to our patients at cost because we want them in their hands.

Hi: I also got a Oral B 3D Excel about 8 months ago. I start using it 3 times a day, but it was my gums.............Now, I use it only at night and thinking on quitting!!! ...I like the small head, the way it works on the occlusal but I cannot use it close to the gum line...I guess everybody is different because my husband loves it and has not complain at all.
I have also noticed some shallow grooves on the buccal surfaces...and I am sure I don't use too much pressure because it has a sensor....
After reading the posts I think I will try the sonident...
Also, don't use a whitening tooth paste with an electric brush....it is too abrasive and they don't recommend it...
