Electron donating group in EAS

Hey guys,

So I know in EAS the electron donating groups are ortho and para directing, but on DAT, do I just always assume it will be added to para? Or is there a rule of thumb whether it will be on ortho or para?

As a general rule, go for the para isomer when an electron donating group is on a benzene ring for the major product. For your curiosity if a methyl group is present, there is a significant amount of ortho, isomer sometimes as much as 60 percent. It is not always fun having to separate these isomers in lab situations!!

Generally, para isomers are less hindered than ortho, so unless an option has both o/p, I would instinctively stick to para.

It could depend on sterics depending on the rest of the ring i believe.
