does anyone know if an em program will accept credit ...say a year of residency if you did fp then decided to do em later? would this more likely happen in a 4 yr em residency or a 3 or both?

Another question along the same lines.....
If you completed an EM residency and practiced for 10 years, what would you have to do to become BC in Family Medicine? Would they require you to complete a 3 year family practice residency or would they give you some credit for the first year?

you would have to complete the residency in fp. this allows you to sit for the boards in fp. most fp programs i know do give credit. we have a couple of surgical residents that decided surgery sucked so i know the program waived some of their rotation months. thats why im curious as to what em progams do. any thoughts?

I believe, relatively commonly, programs will give you a one year "credit". I have seen this for former attendings changing fields and residents changing specialties before finishing their initial program. There is a former OB/GYN doc (24 yrs or so) at UIowa that is in FP, 1 year credit. The new ER program here said they would accept people as 2nd years with an internship already done in something else. I think most EM residencies would consider this.

Good luck!

I had one year of PGY experience, and a colleague had two...we both got out of the inpatient medicine month, and got an extra month of trauma, so no actual shortening of the course.

Interesting.....I might have to ask my PD wherever I match if they would do the same for me...anything to avoid another medicine ward month.
