Long time lurker, 1st time poster here. Looking for some information on applying to away rotations in EM.

I am currently an MS3 that will be applying to EM residencies next year. I have had some testing issues in the past, leading to a failed Step 1 score. I've been working extremely hard to resolve this issue and have thus been scoring above average on all 3rd year national board exams. I sincerely believe that, based on my improvements over the last year, I will score above average when I retake the Step 1. However, I am not taking the exam until after completing my 3rd year.

Does anyone know if away rotations accept US students without a passing Step 1 score? I should have a score by the time I would actually do the away rotation, but I would need to apply before this would be available. I have been doing research on this, and it seems that some websites state a passing USMLE Step 1 in the requirements, but some don't. I'm just worried that down the line in the application process they are going to request this and I won't have it. Anyone here have any first hand experience with this?

Otherwise, I'm wondering if I need to take a year off in order to competitively apply to EM...

Your best bet is to contact programs and ask if they require a passing Step 1 score prior to the rotation. I did one away, and they required that I send them a copy of my score report.

I looked at the form I used for my away. Id doesn't say anything about Step 1 on it, but it requires you to be in good standing with your school. If you think you've taken care of the "good standing" issue, then it seems like you would be able to apply to the place where I rotated, which was a great place.

Would you mind letting me know on here or in PM where it was?

Also, I am 99% sure I am considered in "good standing."

Thanks for the reply
