Does anyone know any about Emergency Med/Critical Care Medicine combined fellowships? I only found three on FREIDA...attached to an IM residency.

It seems that there are anecdotal reports of certified EPs who get into a critical care fellowship normally reserved for internists or anesthesiologists. Are there any PGY-1 programs that are EM and CCM combined (like the EDIC programs in Europe)? How does an EP convince a CCM fellowship director to accept them, rather than the usual anesthesiologist or internist?

I don't know if this is complete hogwash or what, but I have heard folks say that, when EM became a specialty they made some sort of deal with the folks from IM or CCM or something to that effect, they would not allow individuals become boarded in EM/CCM without IM in there also. Someone please correct me if I am completely incorrect.

I know of a few practicing EM physicians who only did an EM residency, did some sort of IM training, took the European boards, and was able to get hired as a critical care attending in the US. In our ICU, there are also traumatologists who are ICU attendings.

Oh, on rereading your post, I missed your point.

What you say is correct - for EM to be recognized, they sold a little bit of their souls and said they wouldn't chase the CCM route.

kgunner1 can shed more light on this, but it's also been discussed before.

Have to briefly post, rounding in the unit, but you will probably find a lot of answers to your questions by going to ACEP's Critical Care Section. There is a FAQ section, some of our recent publications, and recently updated list of programs accepting EM residents.

Hope this helps!

I read the info on the ACEP webpage. Is trying to get into a CCM fellowship in one of those programs after EM a realistic goal? Will an EM resident need to be head and shoulders above their IM counterparts with research and publications, recommendations, etc. That agreement that says that IM fellowships will accept 100% IM residents sounds legit.

I just searched SDN and found a bunch of threads on this topic. My apologies for beating a dead horse. But, if anyone has any of the latest info on trends and the future of EPs in CCM....

i believe that u.maryland now has am optional CC year with their EM/IM program....makes for a 6 year program....
