Hello everybody,

Have a quick question. Got my STEP1 score back a week ago with a 232. EM national avg was 233 for 2018 per charting the outcomes so I know matching itself won't be a big deal (granted I don't tank CK and have bad SLOES). I was wondering what "tier" program I would be likely most competitive at. I'm assuming programs such as Penn/Hopkins etc are way out of reach at this point unless I kill CK, but what about other programs such as Temple/Cooper/UMD? Thanks guys!

P.S: Apologies if this thread is in the wrong forum.

Dude you have 1 data point, how are we suppose to offer useful advice?

From what I understand, your step 1 score should not really hold you back, so what 'tier' you'll be competitive really depends on your clinical grades and especially your SLOE's.

Come back in a year.

Where is your medical school located? What tier of program is your home department/do you have a home department? Are you a likable person (be honest)?

These IMO are all more important than your Step 1/CK scores for EM. Obviously n=1, but I had a friend in the low 220s who did well at his home rotation (top 10 program) and interviewed at all the best programs/matched at a very well regarded program. Point I'm trying to make is that for EM your personality/SLOEs are valued very highly.

At the very least Temple and UMD are better programs than Penn & Hopkins. Tiers in EM don't line up with tiers for undergrad/med school.
Your step score probably doesn't limit you from most programs if you have amazing SLOEs - that matters more, prob at all the programs you listed.
