Hello,

I am a foreign medical student (US resident) interested in EM. I would be glad if anyone could give me some advice on how to proceed. I am in my last year of medschool here in germany and I guess the time will come where I have to take the USMLE. What are the average score in Step 1 and 2 in order to have a chance to get an interview? ALso, whatelse do the program direktor look for? I greatly appreciate any advice !!!😕

uberth,

There are a few IMG on this forum who have matched well in EM, so it is not impossible. I would try to do the best you can on step I and II, no matter what anyone says it is important. Is there any way you could do a elective at a US emergency department? Getting good letters of recommendation and networking a bit does help. Also I would suggest applying to a lot of programs, so that you increase your chances.

Hope this helps, good luck with everything.

Melb

You need to rotate at a ED with an ACGME residency program and obtain a SLOR letter otherwise, it will be extremely difficult without US clinical experience to obtain a residency.

I do have the luck that I am able to do a four month rotation in a hospital that has a residency program in EM, also I do an additional rotation in
Anesthesia for three month during my final year. Unfortunately the german med. ass. does not allow to do the whole year in EM...but I hope this will help anyway. 🙂

Whoever the Ger Med Ass is, they're right... you woulnd't want to do a whole year of EM anywyas. Max you'd want to do three months... most US residents do two, but since you're in a different boat, three would be okay. But don't worry if you can only get one.

Make sure you get a good LOR, and use the SLOR form (do a google search for SLOR and CORD), because the Program Directors prefer that EM-specific LOR.

Do as well as you can on the USMLE.

And like Melb said, apply to lots of programs. You're the underdog, and need to keep that in mind.

The SLOR form is available somewhere on the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine website www.saem.org

Also there you can find a virtual advisor which may be helpful so you could get some contact with someone in a US residency.
