Hi,
I'm a fourth year student, and I'm thinking seriously about doing EM. I know that I eventually want to live in southern california, in particular san diego. I am currently going to medical school in Texas. I doubt I will be able to land a residency at UCSD or UCI, but I was wondering what the job market is like after residency in this part of the country. Is the pay good, is it easy to find a job etc. Thanks.

A few jobs are around, but in general the pay is a lot less than in the midwest or Texas. The cost of living is also a lot higher here.

To be clearer, the good jobs don't come available very often, and those are usually filled without any advertisement. Oftentimes they are filled without anybody knowing aside from a couple candidates. Those jobs pay quite well.

The rest of the job market is fairly fluid. There are jobs in the LA area often, but finding a great job is very difficult. I have no idea about the SD market.

What do you guys mean when you say "good job?" Do you mean good hrs, good pay, diverse pt pathology? Could you please elaborate?

When I did tox in the spring, one of the 1st year fellows landed a job at Kaiser San Diego which was recruiting heavily at the time. He said it was pretty cush--competitive pay for the region (he actually named his price), nice hospital, saw patients basically at his own pace......

but, kind of a unique situation...
