is emergency medicine residency difficult to get in CA, especially if I have no ties to the state? I do not have any connections to the state. I from the East Coast and did schooling there. Lets say I cannot get residency in CA, but do EM residency at a reputed academic institution elsewhere, would it be difficult to find a job in CA.. Orange County area specifically?

Also are physician salaries lower in CA than other parts of the country? On salary.com, I see that average salary of physicians in CA is slightly higher than the average salary of physicians on East Coast or Midwest. So why do a lot of people say that salaries tend to be lower on the West Coast, and especially in CA?

Thank you.

The cost of living in CA is much higher than the cost of living on the East Coast, you need to take that into account.

it is completely do-able. The academic markets are very tight, simply due to the awesome nature of california. However, there are plenty of jobs available. Salaries depend on where and how you want to work. The rate limiting step for california is getting your liscence. Budget 8 months at least. a year is even better.

Myself, and a number of friends all trained on the east coast and we are doing fine in California (northern)
