Does anyone know HOW competitive this is? I hear in the military EM is much more competitive, and I have a hunch it's because the prior service and USUHS students get considered first. I also wouldn't be surprised if people with prior service or those who went to USUHS wanted EM as their specialty more often because of the specialties role in a deployment situation.

So I'm curious if anyone can tell me if they know how often HPSP students get spots at Wright Patt or Wilford Hall, or if us HPSPers usually get civilian deferred or internships? I appreciate any knowledge anyone can pass along. Thanks.

Can a US citizen, non HPSP, with no prior military experience get accepted into a Military EM residency?

HPSP is more likely than USUHS to get a deferral, but not necessarily any more likely to not match (AKA get an internship only position). HPSP students get spots at WP and WH every year. Most AF docs ARE HPSP, so don't feel like you're totally left out.

But it is far more competitive within the military, than without. I think the match rate was 50% or so the year I applied. Good luck.

While anything is possible, don't count on it. Military residency slots are generally filled with USUHS students, HPSP students, physicians with a military commitment in either military or civilian internships, military general medical officers/flight surgeons/battalion surgeons, and military docs who have already completed another residency. I've never heard of anyone getting a spot that didn't fit into one of those categories, but I would talk to the specialty leader for the service you're interested in since they're always trying to recruit/retain more.
