Hey guys- long time lurker. I'm in a bit of a panic now as I'm studying for Step 2 while recently switching gears towards an interest in EM. I'm a 4th year D.O. student and I've put all my eggs into Anesthesiology until recently after completing an elective (last one of my 3rd year) and I'm not so certain that it's for me. I realize that by now scheduling auditions is very challenging, and welcome any advice from those who have gone before me. COMLEX Step 1: 496. Anyone in a similar situation find a way to make this work? I've got auditions set up in gas for July, Aug, and Sept. I've somehow managed to "possibly" have an EM audition in October and November (really late I know). I'm trying to set up an EM rotation at a community hospital where I'm doing my clinical rotations now in August (and not doing the gas rotation) is this a good idea? I figure I can possibly at least get a Letter of Rec from an EM physician then which will be better than having nothing until the completion of Oct and Nov rotations. I'm willing to go wherever and probably applying both AOA and ACGME.. mostly AOA. comlex only. I know i'm in a bind, but this place is full of wonderful people and I gladly welcome all your advice. Thank you

first piece of advice...put your step score/grades in all posts asking about odds of landing in a particular residency 😉

I am a MS4 and know nothing (Jon Snow), but am applying for EM this year. From all my years of lurking here, EM-related stuff, books, sites etc, it seems like in the DO world, away rotations are king. On the MD side, you need SLOEs or you're not going to match. Do you think you can take the USMLE Step 2 CK? If so, I think that would open more doors for you on the MD side. It's kind of late to set up MD rotations, but if you are really serious, I would pull up the directory of EM programs from ACEP or whatever and call every single one until you get at least two aways. November is going to be late for getting a letter, so cancel your gas rotations and get EM ones in. Do you have any red flags? Apply broadly, widely, and early. It doesn't hurt to attach $100 bills to your application either.

well just got sooooo lucky today with an audition offer for August (AoA). I also have one set up in October (MD) and November (AOA). guess I gotta try and fill sept with something but at least that's a start right ?

That really isn't that late for an audition. I got my first choice program and I rotated through there last November. Good Luck.

I think this could still work for you! I watched some of my closest friends go through a very similar dilemma two classes in a row. What everyone else has said, I think is great advice. EM is tough though and be ready to do a rotating traditional year if you don't match and then try again the following year. Any of my friends that were unfortunately put in this route, did really well once they rematched. I would hate for you to go through but know it's feasible and have a back up plan.

Everyone here is just outstanding. always ready for advice and encouragement. That's a rare find in most medical students (gunner mentality). I've even heard that some of my classmates who are gunning for EM are not even telling each other where they're doing auditions, etc. so they can keep their strategies to themselves. and these people were thick as thieves all 3 years! I know we're all competitive people or else we wouldn't be here. I won't try to say that I'm someone who's hell bent on EM or nothing else, b/c frankly I don't know yet....I haven't had a rotation and hope that I discover something wonderful. Seems like the only way to truly test the waters and see if you like EM and have a chance is to go almost "ALL IN" with auditions and such so here goes nothing ha! I wish everyone the best of luck this upcoming cycle !
