I was just checking to see if anyone was aware of any joint EM/MBA programs. I'm just curious and didnt know of a good source to find them.

Moreover, how do they work? Is the MBA free? Do you still get paid during MBA education? Can you go anywhere or that specific institute?

Thanks again!

There are some admin fellowships that let you get an MBA...but remember that an MBA is about 60 credits and will take 2 years.

I think a better option is working as an attending and getting an executive MBA. Columbia and Wharton are tops in the Northeast, and Berkley out West, UNC down South. Most EMBA programs love having a couple MDs in each class because healthcare is one of the biggest industries in the country/world, and it makes for great classes/discussion to get the medical prospective from someone actually practicing medicine.

EM is the one field where you're full time medical schedule can fit perfectly into an EMBA.

Feel free to PM me.

Not true for everyone, it really depends how much work you want to put into it. (I have 4 kids and most people in my EMBA are married and a lot have kids and/or busier/global jobs...it's a supportive environment and the courses are more to the point, no memorizing, a lot of open book tests, etc...)

You do have to get back in school mode though, get ready to read when the kids go to bed, etc. (I really never felt out of school mode b/c I entered right after the EM boards.)

My point is it's probably better doing a 20 month EMBA and being an attending than doing a 2 yr admin fellowship as a PGY4,5 or 6. If you're getting your MBA you'll likely start doing admin hours in your department and can have a better professional experience/opportunity than you would at a fellow level.
