Hey guys,

Can anyone give me an estimate of what numbers a DO student would need (COMLEX/USMLE/Grades...) to be competitive for your average emergency medicine residency program (AOA or ACGME). Are some areas of the country more competitive? (I eventually want to go to residency in the midwest) What extracurriculars would an average EM resident have? (research..etc). I am just looking for general trends nothing specific, hopefully someone here might have some information?

Numbers can be found here
Charting Outcomes of the Match

Other -- EM is really looking for leaders and extracurriculars that show something beyond the numbers. Overall - competent numbers, balanced personality, leadership potential, diversity (background/experiences)

Research is gravy but not overly emphasized - especially if you're obviously not too into it

general trends? becoming more competitive but AOA is not emphasized as I've gotten plenty of great interviews at top notch programs with my non-AOA numbers.

if you are DO and want to do allopathic residency, it seems to make sense to take the USMLE in addition to the normal DO tests

If you want to do residency in the midwest you shouldn't encounter a whole lot of roadblocks due solely to being a DO. If you head out west or some places in the southeast still don't interview DOs. Bottom line is that as a DO you should probably plan on trying to be above average in terms of applicants to EM. You can certainly do it though, there are many DOs in EM residencies through out the country. If you are wondering about a specific programs approach to taking DO canidates looking on their website and checking if they have ever had a DO or have one currently will sort of point you in the right direction.
So....rotate, do well on your rotation, get some good letters and you should be OK as long as your board scores and grades don't hurt you.

For DO's, remember, there's not as many slots available for the DO residencies as there are ACGME residencies.

Around NE Ohio, the average ACGME program takes about 8-12 per class, and the DO's take ~4 per class.

The average number of people typically interviewed per slot is about 10, i think (at least ACGME).

My hospital interviewed 125 for 4 slots (in the DO world).

Your USMLE needs to be greater than 200.

You also need to have some emergency medical experience.

Don't forget about the osteopathic programs. I know some are not the best, but many are quality and a handful are dually accredited. EM is the second largest Osteo Residency next to family medicine in terms of the number of programs, I believe its now going to be at 41 for this upcoming application year.

I would have to think that neither an MD or DO would be all that competitive with numbers only >200. I would shoot for >220 but obviously this is just an arbitrary number in a much bigger schematic.

As a DO, I received 9 ACGME interviews with a USMLE I and II below 210. I applied to 18 programs.

In those interviews, my board scores were only mentioned in 2 of them as a negative.
