I'm a 3rd year medical student and I have my EM rotation coming up in 2 weeks. I am trying to purchase a pocket book for EM and I want to hear your recommendations please!

My 1st choice is The new EM pocket book which comes out on Sept 13th. It will be too late by the I get this because my rotation is only 4 weeks long and I'm not thinking about going into ER.

I also prefer not getting the older edition.

My other choices are
2) Tintinalli EM Manual Pocket book
3) Tarascon Adult Emergency Pocketbook
4) EMRA Top Clinical Problems

I can't comment on the new edition obviously because it's not out yet, but unless it's a vast improvement on the older edition it's a waste of money. I loved the internal medicine one and I was hoping it would be similar but it didn't even hold a flame compared. Then again, I'm referring to the older edition, so who knows how this one will be.

Zane's is good. I still carry it in my work bag, definitely not in my coat haha. It's definitly something I would reccomend to those whom are new to EM since it is organized by chief complaint, and then goes on about pertinent interview ?'s/ physical exam findings + differentials/ workup.

Tarcson's is definitely the bible as far as what you can carry in your pocket. Tarcson's EM along with their pharmacopia are the only references I actually carry with me.

I would highly recommend both of these. Just don't be the 3rd year with 4 or 5 reference books in your pocket swinging around in your coats putting people's eyes out. 😛
