Off-service residents leaving the ED is a bogus excuse to increase the size of the program. Anybody who has had to supervise off-service interns in the ED knows that they slow down, rather than speed up, the patient flow through the department.Originally posted by cg1155
I can't remember which, but I recall that about 1/3 of the programs I interviewed at in the south east were talking about modest increases in class size. Usually it was because other services were pulling their interns from the ED due to work hour restrictions. I think Duke was one of the places talking about going bigger (6-8 IIRC).
